I recently headed to Geelong for a braiding workshop. Geelong is the second largest city in Victoria, gateway to the famous Great Ocean Road.
There are hundreds of hair salons in this area, and I visited to run an all-day specialised, braiding workshop for 6 experienced hairdressers at Helen Dunne Education, Hairdressing School. As well as being an experienced hairdresser, Helen delivers on the job training to hairdressing apprentices. Her stylish school was the perfect set up for my workshop.
My ‘students’ had various experience in the hair industry. From a few years in hairdressing to 30+ years, and half were hairdressing teachers themselves! I felt honoured to have something to share.
As most of you know, I am not a hairdresser. Braiding is my passion. I have a creative skill in braiding and braiding design, which I was thrilled to demonstrate to these lovely ladies. I love being a freelance stylist because it gives me the ability to bring a new dimension to styling. It’s exciting for me to meet hairdressers who are interested in extending their braiding knowledge. At this workshop, all 6 hairdressers were eager to invest in their careers and keen to learn. They loved what I taught, and said it was, ‘new and fresh.’
I covered techniques such as:
- Weaving
- Braiding with elastics and rings
- Multi-strand braids
- Waterfalls
- Unique updos.
The styles looked amazing and the students did an awesome job! There was a style to suit any age or occasion.
What can you expect at one of my workshops you ask?
I like to teach my hairdressing students challenging braids, pushing them to new limits using 2 key tools:
- Clear demonstrations
- Simple instructions
Above all, I make sure that everyone comes away from my workshops with new ideas to inspire them for their next client’s hair requests.
I believe braiding is an art form. I love to show the diversity in braiding and how fashion forward they currently are. More and more clients are requesting to have their hair braided. Being a part of this trend is exciting.
With new friends, we all admired some exceptional work and the day wrapped up with every student receiving a certificate. It was lots of fun and a huge success!

It’s easy to see you had a great time in addition to enhancing your skill/art. I’m seriously thinking about attending one of these classes. Maybe soon. Cheers

Hi there. Are you doing anymore courses on braiding in Geelong? I recently realised after 22 years of hairdressing my braiding skills are very limited! Annmarie
Hi Annmarie,
Thank you for your enquiry. I don’t have any workshops currently booked in however I do run private salon workshops if this works for you. Feel free to email me on admin@prettylittlebraids.com if you would like further details. Thanks, Shelley
